I am a former FCI employee looking to return to the company. Do I need to do anything special?

The position I’m interested in applying for requires a security clearance and I don’t have one. What should I do?

The hiring process addresses whether someone will be initially selected for a particular position within an organization. The security clearance process does not begin until after an applicant is hired or the organization has made a written commitment for employment and the applicant has accepted the offer in writing. Further, personnel security clearances are only initiated when employees will have a need for access to classified information to perform his or her duties. An individual may be processed for a personnel security clearance when employed by a cleared contractor in a job requiring access to classified information. As an exception, a candidate for employment may be processed for a personnel security clearance provided a written commitment for employment has been made by the contractor, and the candidate has accepted the offer in writing. The commitment for employment will indicate that employment shall commence within 30 days of the granting of eligibility for a PCL.

If I don’t have a clearance, how long does it take to get one?

A lot of detailed information is required to conduct a background investigation. The form the clearance applicant completes is online and permits information to be gathered even after the process fill out the form (once), complete and submit it. Industry interim Secret determinations will be based on the following: Acceptable proof of citizenship, favorable review of a completed Standard Form 86, favorable review of local personnel, base, military police, medical, and security records as applicable, an appropriate investigation opened by the Investigation Service Provider, and favorable review of the Federal Bureau Investigations Criminal History Report (fingerprint report). The interim Secret determination will be processed after the Personnel Security Management Office for Industry submits the investigation request to the Office of Personnel Management and receives the fingerprint results. Due to recent backlog of Personnel clearances, we are unable to provide an accurate timeline.

The position I’m interested in requires a different clearance then what I currently have. What will this mean if I am hired?

The company determines the positions that require a security clearance, as well as the level required, based upon the duties and responsibilities of each position. This determination is based on contractual needs and requirements. Only those persons who have a bona fide need-to-know and who possess a personnel security clearance at the same or higher level as the classified information to be disclosed may have access to classified information. In most cases, a personnel security clearance remains in effect as long as the individual remains continuously employed by the cleared contractor. If a new employee holds a higher clearance then what is required at the time of hire, the higher clearance is held in abeyance and available to be assigned immediately.
